In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.
When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.
Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

Review:

I saw great reviews of this book and its sequels on many blogs, but I was wary of reading it, because I usually don't like romances. But this book completely won me over.

I absolutely adored the love story of Kate and Vincent in this book. I am quite sure it is the best paranormal romance I've ever read. Most of the time I am disappointed by the romance in YA books. A bad love triangle, arrogant love interest, no or unexplained chemistry etc etc. This book had no such things. Vincent and Kate just had such a sweet relationship and it felt realistic and not at all rushed.

The characters were amazing!

I could strongly relate to the protagonist Kate. She is not really out-going and rather spends her time reading than going to parties. She is a very strong character, she managed to pick her life up after parent's death and come out of her depression. She stand her ground in the middle of all the paranormal chaos and proceeds to think rationally even after she fell in love (unlike some protagonists..)

Vincent is very romantic and sweet. He is the perfect gentleman and boyfriend. I usually don't really feel anything for the male character in YA books, but this guy made me fall in love with him.

The secondary were well-developed too. Georgia, Kate's sister and grandparents (yes, the family here exists!) and the other Revenants, like Jules and Charlotte, they all added something to the story. I especially loved Jules, he was so funny and an amazing friend to Vincent. I can't wait to know more about those characters, things like the backstories of all the Revenants.

The supernatural element in the book was of course the concept of the Revenants. I thought these zombie heroes were very unique, I've never read about something like it. The writer explained the concept, the abilities and the history well. The task of the Revenants is pretty cruel, sacrifice yourself to save others, it's not a fate anyone would want.

The setting of the story was very well chosen. All the places in Paris Kate went, the museums, the cafes, were written with much detail and I mean, which city is a better foundation for a love story than Paris?

The pacing increased throughout the book and in the end there's an epic climax, I always love this set-up. There wasn't any cliffhanger, but the end did make me want to read the next book.

I would recommend this book to all YA readers, especially if you love (paranormal) romance books. I for sure am going to continue this series.
